Meet La’Keitha:
The Unicorn

There has always been something magical about my path.  From beginning college at 16 years old to being both a litigator and transactional attorney, turned entrepreneur and government executive, I can truly have lived 10 lives. It was along that journey that I became passionate about the idea of harnessing the magic of having multiple skills into one creative approach to help more businesses succeed. When I initially dreamed up the Unicorn Strategies idea, I was struck by the overwhelming needs that many businesses have, while lacking the ability to pivot, problem solve and innovate their way out of challenges.

GOVERNMENT & EXECUTIVE LEADER

Most recently, I’ve served as chief of staff for DeKalb County CEO Michael L. Thurmond, where I’ve been responsible for the day-to-day operations of the CEO’s office, including the management of the Department of Communications and senior staff across the enterprise. While helping manage and advance the strategic priorities of the CEO, providing executive counsel on policy and fiscal governance, I also served as a liaison for community partners, constituent groups and government agencies such as the Metro Atlanta Regional Chairs Atlanta Regional Commission, MARTA, ATL Board and more.

LEGAL COUNSELOR

Prior to serving as the CEO’s Chief of Staff, I was an Assistant County Attorney representing multiple departments including Purchasing & Contracting where in 2016 I worked with community stakeholders to draft and pass the “Buy DeKalb Local Small Business Enterprise” legislation, creating a path for local businesses to earn county contracts and achieve financial success.

Prior to being a local government attorney, I was corporate counsel for the late Herman J. Russell and the Russell family’s businesses, Harland Clark Corp, and a mass tort/pharmaceutical and medical device litigator for a large AM100 law firm in Atlanta.

COMMUNICATIONS EXPERT

My love of the written and spoken word began early as a school lunch reporter for WPLG in Miami, Florida and as a CNN news contributor in high school for the nationally syndicated “Real News for Kids”. I later obtained an undergraduate degree at Clark Atlanta University in Mass Media Arts/Public Relations followed by a Juris Doctorate from Tulane Law School.

I now have the pleasure of working with elected officials, entrepreneurs and business owners from all over the world on communicating their business strategies and decisions internally to their employee and externally to stakeholders, customers, and communities.
